Well I guess I been around smoke most of my life..
I was sitting here thinking earlier. Thinking about a random memory… I was remembering sitting on my grandmother porch, way out in the yard were my dad and one of his brothers tearing an engine in a Dodge Challenger down. My dads family was “country”. So as I watched this engine being lifted up the very same big wooden hang things on/literally made of old trees/been there at least 50 year and would later be used to hang/skin/ and clean deer,,,,my dad and his brother are there under this hood. Both with a cigarette hanging out of there lips. That’s when I started thinking. Never was I NOT around a smoker. Everyone smoked that I grew up around….except my mom, she hated it. So my dad smoked most of his life, he doesn’t now, he chews. Chewing or dipping has always been his replacement. He hasn’t smoked in a long time. My grandma smoked, as did my moms brother and sister and father. My other grandma smoked, and all of my dads brothers and sisters.
Everyone I knew smoked. I have tons of memories, memories I can replay over and over from life. In everyone of those someone is smoking. I was destined to become a smoker. When I did people seemed surprised. The very first time I smoked I was probably around the age of 7. My grandmother who smoked but wasn’t supposed to let me take a drag off of a non menthol, non filter, Pall Mall. I remember running to a water fountain very quickly. I didn’t smoke again until the age of probably 17 or 18 and that’s when my bff and I bought some Swisher Sweets to keep the bugs away at the golf course. From that moment on other than 2 different 3 – 4 month times, I have been a smoker. I went from the Swishers and cigars to non menthol, non filter, Camels. I was gonna be like my grandpa according to my grandma that was what he smoked when I was little. The only time I would ever smoke menthol was if I had smoked some pot. Whenever that happened I was always with my cousin who smoked Newports. Around the age of 20 I moved to Miami and realized the entire city smokes menthol. I tried to stay a non menthol smoker but just couldn’t pull it off. So from then up until I started vaping I was a menthol guy but would still buy some gas station cigars and every now and then some finer ones at the smoke shop. However…since vaping I am totally over menthol. I still will put a drop in a tank every now and then.
So, maybe I was destined to smoke, and then vape. I don’t know. What I do have is just about every memory that I haven’t burnt out has someone else, if it isn’t me, smoking. Maybe now I will start creating memories and then later in life my mid-age memories will be of me and others vaping. Who know?

I too have been surrounded by smokers all my life. I still am too. Some people just don’t want to make the switch, and have no desire to quit. Thanks for sharing this story.
I have a memory of me as a young child asking my mother to not smoke anymore, and she never smoked again.
But my dad has been a smoker all my life, and I hated it as a kid. I never smoked until after high school, even though I used to hang out with all the smokers when I was in high school.
Somehow I ended up a smoker, and probably worse than anyone I knew. But I’m glad that’s all behind us now.
when i was reading your post earlier, it made me think that many of us have had similar types of experiences, but the beautiful thing—-you’re helping to change that direction for every life that comes in contact with you from here on out. what a wonderful thing! thank you for sharing
Cool story. i also grew up around a lot of smokers. Everyone except my father smoked. When i was in my early teens, I used to love it when my maternal grandfather would come to visit…he was kinda loaded with dough and would always buy me stuff…but he’d also take me fishing and let me drink beer and smoke his unfiltered Old Golds. That was some tasty cigs….
Anyway, yeah — I’m sure the vape memories will be better because you’ll be living longer to have more of ‘em! Cheers!

Great story. I was always surrounded by smokers too. I don’t know why my family was surprised when I started. I was one of the last to quit. The next to last in fact, but I did it. There was no one at Christmas dinner this year that smoked. I introduced the last smoker in our family to vaping prior to that dinner. I hope he takes the initiative to pick it up, he seemed like he might.
That is probably a common theme among a lot of us smokers. Growing up around smokers.

How nostalgic. I kind of feel the same, my mother has always smoked… and then in high school a lot of my friends smoked. I moved away, but I have sent my old friends messages in persuasion to start vaping… including my mother. None of them have jumped on the boat yet… But ya never know.

i understand ghost! on my moms side of the family almost everyone smokes, both of my parents smoked, most of us have either quit or have turned to e-cigs

Brings back memories… The one I suppress now that im a vapaholic.
It seemed like everyone smoked when I was a kid. I suppose there must have been some adults I knew who didn’t, but they don’t come to mind. For a long time I just could not take second hand smoke seriously because I grew up in a haze of cigarette smoke and it just seemed normal. Once I did get the message I stopped smoking indoors even at home. Now, of course, vaping is something no one minds at all, and for the first time I’m starting to be a little bothered by other peoples’ second hand smoke. I don’t think I’ll say much about it, though. Not after all the years I was creating it myself.
