This could be the Day!!!
First, a little bit about me. I started smoking when I was 13. Back in those days, you didn’t have 100 brands with a dozen variations of each, just the basics. We (my parents and I) smoked Camel filters. When my folks decided to save a few bucks, they would buy Laredo tobacco and we would make our own. You know, family cigarette rolling night. Ah, good times!?
Anyway, point being, I was used to smoking pretty strong cigs.
When I was 14, we were visiting my mom’s aunt and uncle. They were in their mid seventies.
One morning, my great-uncle and I were sitting on the front porch and I lit up a cig. He said, “I smoke too, you know?” I said surprised, “Really?”, as I had never seen him smoke anything. He went on to tell me that he only smoked a cig about every year or maybe even two years. He added, “But, when I want one, I want it just as much as anyone.” Then he told me to go in and get his pack out of the top desk drawer. I went in to find a pack of Lucky Strikes there and took them out to him. He flipped two out, sticking one in his mouth and handing the other to me. “Try one of these.”, he said.
I put it in my mouth, lit my lighter, and began to draw in the flame. The smoke came down the cylinder, over my tongue, and hit the back of my throat. Immediately, I let out a big cough and gasp for air. It felt and tasted like someone had shoved very old hay they had first set on fire down my throat. He began laughing, almost falling out of his chair. As he laughed, I, not wanting to look a fool, tried another drag (idiot). Only to recreated the results of the first attempt.
After I caught my breath and he stopped laughing, he told me the pack of cigs was about 25 years old!!
And then he laughed some more……..
So, now here I sit almost 35 years later trying TODAY to quit, once and for all, this nasty habit. I can’t help but wonder, “What if I had finished that 25 year old ciggy?” Would that have been enough to make me give it up right then and there?
Hmmmmm???
I guess I’ll never know. ![]()
In the past couple of weeks, I’ve talked about still smoking while vaping. Of course, you all have been very encouraging. Telling me ‘don’t give up, ‘you’ll know when it’s time’, ‘I’ve been there (or I am there)’, the positive support goes on and on. {That is what EcigAdvanced is all about, if you are new here!!!} Thank you for all your help.
I have decided that TODAY, I am going to stop “testing the water” and dive in head first. My wife will be at work until 10:30 tonight, so there’s no risk of me becoming irritable and saying something I would regret for a long time to come!!
I will admit to you that I do have a couple of stinkies (analogs) stashed away, just in case. I will be watching two of my grandsons (3 and 7 yrs.) and the stash could save their life! ![]()
I would like to encourage any of you, who like me, have been teetering of the fence to join me. No pressure, if you feel ready, know you’re not alone.
Wish me luck (and a bunch of patience)

Man, I know wine generally improves with age, but I’m not so sure about a pack of chokes.
Good post!
Great story. I remember Luckys. It’s a wonder that old cigarette didn’t incinerate as soon as the flame hit it.
I love this story bybee and I wish you lots of luck on cutting those last tobacco cigarettes out from your new Vaping lifestyle!
good luck
Ha ha …harsh smoke ..:)
Good luck my friend!
Yay you got your Blog!
good luck
Oh and I hope you never have to use your stash
Thanks all. Michelle, I hate to admit it, but I did puff one of the stash. But that was Saturday. Today, Sunday, I Will Not. I’m Done with them for good!!!
good luck
You can do it. Just don’t pick up a cigarette again. Mind over matter
luck!!
it can be done
Glad to hear the steps you’ve made. Keep it up.
It’s sunday, how did that go for you?
I wish you the best of luck on your journey!!!
im with you, i smoked for a couple years. this christmas my wife got me a good ecig starter kit with 2 bats and 2 clearos and 5 flavors….
i stopped smoking christmas and this is how, i threw all my lighters, ciggerrettes, cigars, and accessories away immediately, i had no safety net, i had nothing to fall back on. having a plan “b” is admitting your going to fail. having “a stash” is admitting defeat to your only enemy , yourself.
as long as you have a couple cigerrettes stashed away, you will not quit smoking. do it for you, then your family, then your friends. if you read this and do not go toss out the cancer immediately, youve been defeated again
good luck bud

Well, I’ve had a couple of ‘slip-ups’, but still on the right path.
No problem! Also, I think (?). Doubt was in 2008. Maybe someone knows their Oscae trivia better than me.
