Before I ever tried an electronic cigarette, I tried my best to quit smoking cigarettes. My first attempt was probably about 4 years ago when I tried to quit “cold turkey”. This approach did not work. I just craved cigarettes so badly, and I felt the side effects of quitting instantly; it was not good.

So then my  friend told me he quit using nicotine gum, but he was smoking while he said this. He said it works, but he just decided to smoke again because he was  stressed. I listened and bought some expensive nicotine gum. First of all it was just plain nasty tasting, and secondly I did not feel it working at all. I think the gum works better for someone who dips, or chews tobacco.

So my next attempt was the nicotine patch. I put it on as the label instructed and I did not want a cigarette…for a while. The place where I put the patch on started turning red and itching. I thought it was normal. So I went to sleep, and it took me a LONG while to fall asleep. When I finally did, I had the most vivid, scary dreams imaginable. I always thought having a dream that felt real would be cool, until I had the vivid dream, well nightmare. It was a terrible nightmare, and it felt so real I was scared out of my mind. I woke up, took the patch off, and the red rash was even worse. I googled the side effects, and there were a LOT. They included rashes, vivid dreams, chest pain, trouble sleeping, depression, anxiety, and a lot more terrible side effects that they did not want the buyer knowing about.

So finally I tried a friends electronic cigarette which I had never even heard of before. It looked just like a cigarette, but tasted better. Vapor came out while I exhaled, I thought it was smoke at the time, and I knew this was the thing for me. He told me all about it how it is just nicotine, and the smoke was actually water vapor. He showed me where he bought his at, so I bought the same one. It wasn’t the best, but I did not know that at the time. All I know is that it actually worked for me and kept me off real cigarettes for like 4 months! After that I searched around and of course found out better ones to buy. Every time I “upgraded” an e-cig, it felt easier to quit.

Now I consider myself pretty smart about electronic cigarettes thanks to a lot of forums, and ECA. I am still learning, but ECA is teaching me more than all the other sites/forums combined. So now I have gone about 3 years or more without a cigarette; I didn’t keep track when I first started. I’m sure a lot of you guys probably did the same thing as me, and finally found out about e-cigs. All I have to say is that the e-cig was the only way that I would ever quit smoking real cigarettes, and I am so grateful!

Me, too, except I only tried the gum, which helped with nicotine cravings, but not the urge to smoke. Cold turkey never lasted longer than a day. With e-cigs, it’s been not only easy, but a pleasure, to leave smoking behind.

When you compare vaping to patches and especially gum (like eating an ashtray) you find there is no comparison.

I tried gum, patches…nada. Zip. Vap[ing has been the only thing keeping me from hitting the chokes. And what’s funny is when i got my first disposable blu I didn’t even intend to quit; but here I am two years later. huzzah!

Too bad the ones trying to ban vaping don’t read this stuff. Guess the truth doesn’t interest them.

i think that has been everyones experience..
why they try to ban something that works for silly reasons is beyond me…
    vaping works,that is all!

I had problems with the patch too. I guess it was a reaction to the adhesive. Really enjoying the personal stories being shared . Thanks boss.

I’m glad you finally found something to keep you off of cigarettes, that’s awesome :) .. I think a lot of people blow off the idea of ecigs because they don’t understand them, or think they’re going to be like every other method they’ve tried and failed at.

It’s no secret why these bozos want to control e-cigs…because they think we’re too effing stupid to know any better. If that’s the case, we’re obviously too effing stupid to vote for these miserable cretins…but I don’t see them trying to ban themselves so we don’t have to vote for ‘em. Asshats.

My story is very much the same as yours. I tried everything to quit smoking! From “cold turkey”, to gum and mints, to lollipops, to nicotine gum and patches, and even Chantix. which I think should be taken off the market because I consider myself a very mentally stable person and I went absolutely bonkers while taking that stuff! I even went as far as trying Chantix twice even though it made me go crazy the first time and didn’t really help me quit at all. I was a very unique kind of smoker. I was a smoker that HATED smokers and cigarettes so my desire to quit was very strong but my willpower was no match for my addiction. I smoked about 2 packs a day for 18 years or so before I quit and I quit the day I bought my ecig! I am so thankful for electronic cigarettes. I honestly believe they saved my life!
