point-counterpointThere are not many strong arguments for the harsh and unrelenting regulation of electronic cigarettes.  The arguments that are made tend to be flimsy and exaggerated in nature.  Here’s the single strongest facts the electronic cigarette community have on their side against those arguments that would have most people believe e-cigs are out to corrupt our children and enslave our nicotine-addled minds.

They could be as dangerous as smoking, but we just don’t know the risks of use.

Regardless of the impurities and toxins in electronic cigarettes, the absence of smoke means that they are 95% to 99% less harmful than conventional cigarettes.  Electronic cigarette vaporizing liquid has only 3 major components — a pharmaceutical base, nicotine, and flavor additives.  Researchers know more about the effects of vaporizing liquid than they do cigarette smoke which is believed to possess between 10,000 and 100,000 constituents.

Supporting Evidence: A BBC Radio Interview with epidemiology expert John Britton, a study of electronic cigarette cytotoxicity, a study of electronic cigarette vaporizing liquid contents.

The existence of second hand vapor means e-cigs should be subject to smoking bans.

Electronic cigarette vapor dissipates in 11 seconds and has no discernible effect on bystanders.  This is a dramatic difference from the 19-20 minute life span of cigarette smoke.  Researchers found the second hand effects of smoking were higher than the impact of first hand use of electronic cigarettes.

Supporting Evidence: A French study of electronic cigarette vapor, a study looking at the respiratory effects of electronic cigarettes.

Electronic cigarettes appeal to teens and offer a gateway to begin smoking for youth that otherwise would not start.

Of non-smoking teens, less than 1% have tried electronic cigarettes and none show continued use.  Teens who are interested in smoking, do smoke, or may smoke are far more likely to use the real thing.  E-cigs appeal more to adults who wish to reduce the health or financial impact of their smoking with almost 90% of electronic cigarette users being over the age of 30.

Supporting Evidence: A survey of teen e-cig and smoking experience, a survey of electronic cigarette user experience.

I’ve been a smoker for over 40 years and have been diagnosed with every calamity to my lungs possible. I was dying with a death-rattle I couldn’t shake. As a last resort I went on-line and picked-up an E-cig. I NEVER smoked another cigarette again!!! Now I can breathe, taste food, and my doctor was absolutely amazed! So yeah, I’m gonna sit back and watch how Big Pharma, and Big Tobacco are going to fuck this up for everyone. How many politicians can they shove in their pockets? Pretty sad. You cannot beat the numbers though, but its all about the cash now, isn’t it?

I smoked 2-1/2 packs of cigs a day for 30 years, I tried EVERYTHING to stop smoking and nothing worked. I had a horrible smokers cough, and chest pains and I Knew it was killing me, but i just could not stop. One day my son handed me an E-cig and asked me to try one more time to stop smoking, i said i would try it but had no faith it would work, To my amazement, I never picked up another cig after that day, I am going on 3 years tobacco free now, and I can taste food like never before, i can smell things again, and the cough and chest pains are gone. E-Cigs SAVED MY LIFE ! There is no doubt about that in my mind, or my families. To think I am a disabled gulf War Vet, and almost died from smoking, not the war. If E-cigs are banned, it will prove that our government does not care about us, or our health, BILLIONS of dollars in Taxes, will be gone, Big Tobacco will lose billions, and Pharmaceutical companies will loose billions because of e-cigs, because people will no longer be getting cancer from smoking. So let us see which is more important the CITIZENS of this Great Nation, or the MONEY ! I truly hope they choose wisely.
