Oklahoma City’s KOCO has reported that local police determined an e-cigarette was the cause of an ‘explosion’ at an apartment complex in Oklahoma City. According to the report, an e-cigarette under a desk in the front office of the complex overheated and exploded. Fortunately, no serious harm or fire resulted. One apartment complex employee was taken to the hospital after inhaling fumes from the explosion, but checked out in good condition shortly after.

The event occurred early Tuesday and in consideration of the Boston Marathon attacks yesterday, terrible timing for anything to be mentioned in the same sentence as the word ‘explosion’. It’s also poor timing considering the current fight that is going on in the Oklahoma state legislature to prevent e-cigarettes from being regulated and taxed as a tobacco product. It’s our hope that the tendency of the media to sensationalize negative e-cigarette stories won’t cause this one to grow into something more than it is, especially in the current media frenzy.

Then why even glorify the story in a post? Really..

I find it difficult to believe an e-cig just sitting under a desk would “explode.” Something isn’t being told to us about this.

What should have been reported was that because it was an e-cig, there is still a building to go to, in the case of a “typical” cigarette the entire building could have burned down and who know how many casualties.

For certain not all the facts here…not even close. I hope they follow up on this when “the rest of the story” comes out. I’m sure now we’ll here this story over and over now for the nxt several years regardless.

That’s ridiculous. I’ve been using e-cigs for 4 years. There’s no way one would EXPLODE. That’s silliness. It would be no more likely to explode than an ipod. There’s nothing combustible in it! I’m calling bullsh*t on this one.

                  Definitely something awry here.

What is there to catch fire?

Real journalism is essentially dead in this country. We live in a time of soundbites and sensationalism.
Fire, maybe, explosion, I’m not buying it.

Somebody made a good point in the comment section of the original news: ” iPods can and have exploded. http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/03/exploding-ipod-blows-up-in-apples-face

Batteries fail and explode all the time. Thankfully, with e-cigs incidents like this have been limited to a handful, but the media seems to love to pick up on them when the do happen.

Of course they never mention the circumstances or the type used. Probably some idiot who has no idea what he is doing.

while it is bad timing for this kind of story, something doesnt sound right. just fuel for the fire for OK politicians against e-cigs. wonder if the fire department had any say in what the cause was

Really short story, very few details, was it allegedly plugged in or just laying on the floor and randomly exploded, no name for the “firefighters” the writer spoke with. And yes, laptops, cellphones and even electronic toothbrushes explode. Something is missing here. It seems we are not getting all the information here and the timing of the story is very convenient for the Antz and the proposed taxation and online sales ban in OK.

Love your comment Stogismkr! Hopefully this story won’t get much attention as it is very incomplete, very poor reporting.

Now i’m very happy I stumbled across this during my search for something concerning
                                        this.
